Simbang Gabi

Today marks the start of the Simbang Gabi.

Simbang Gabi is a nine day novena in preparation for Christmas Day. A lot of people attend the masses and complete it because they are praying for a particular wish to be granted.

I have fond memories of Simbang Gabi, I first attended the Simbang Gabi when I was in 2nd year high school with my Lola Edith. In our parish up to this date, there is an anticipated Simbang Gabi and two dawn masses for the Simbang Gabi to accommodate the many parishioners of St Joseph’s Church. The schedule for the dawn masses is one mass is at 3:00 am and the other is at 4:00 am. My Lola and I would attend the first mass.

I initially wanted to hear mass with my cousins at 4:00 am but decided against it later because I know that they will not be able to complete it because it ‘s really hard to get up in bed very early. I know that with my grandma with me there’s no chance that she’ll missed any of the masses plus I don’t want her to be walking alone to church. I desperately wanted to complete the Christmas masses because I was asking for my mother’s healing; that was the time that the cancer cells spread to her left arm. God granted my prayers and I had my mom with me for three more years

I practiced attending the Simbang Gabi Masses all throughout high school and when I was in college I opted to attend the anticipated Simbang Gabi which was at 9:00 in the evening, this time I was with my father and Lola Edith.

When I started working, I wasn’t able to complete the masses already because of my work schedule.

But for this year, I am having my own schedule of Simbang Gabi, I’m going to hear the masses at 6:00 am before I go to work which I started already this morning.. I’m attending nine masses not only because I’m praying for a particular intention but as a thanksgiving to God for the many blessings He has poured upon me and my loved ones.

The gifts have been wrapped, our house has been decorated for the season and even the menu for Christmas Day has been planned out already, attending the masses is for the preparation of my heart for the birth of my Savior.

Hapee - Is My Toothpaste Brand

I’ve made a big switch.

I’ve changed my toothpaste brand to Hapee Toothpaste and it was Cecilio K. Pedro who made me try this brand.

Cecilio K.Pedro is the man behind Lamoiyan Corporation, the company that produces Hapee Toothpaste.

Cecilio K. Pedro started a company that supplies the aluminum tubes of the toothpaste of the different toothpaste brands in the country. When those brands decided they wanted to change the aluminum container to plastic, Cecilio Pedro had no other clients to offer their product to.

Instead of closing down the company, throwing into waste the entire leftover toothpaste container and having 200 people employed in his company go unemployed, he decided he will make his own toothpaste and compete with the giant toothpaste companies in the country. He made his toothpaste, place it in the aluminum container and sold it to the public and the rest was history. Hapee is now placed in plastic containers as well and is the country’s second leading toothpaste brand.

I liked this product because I know that every time I purchased it, I’m helping the deaf-mute employees of this company. Around 20% of the employees of Lamoiyan Corporation are deaf-mute. The company has been awarded in 1993 by the Personnel Management Association of the Philippines with the Most Outstanding Program for Equal Employment Opportunities for the Disabled.

I have high regards for the company because they employ the deaf-mute and because of its mission to provide quality products that are affordable to the Filipinos. Lamoiyan Corporation is a 100% Filipino owned company.

And that's the reason , Hapee is my brand.

World AIDS Day

Facing AIDS - World AIDS day 2008

December 1 is World AIDS Day. It is the day where people and organizations around the world join hands in bringing attention to AIDS.

I am joining the many bloggers around the world in creating awareness about the disease, and being a part of Bloggers Unite for World AIDS Day.

In the Philippines, there have been 3,000 documented cases of people afflicted with the disease and the study reported that the figure can go as high as 8,000 to include the undocumented cases. Worldwide, about 33 million people are infected with the dreaded disease.

It is important to note that in the United States half of the documented cases of people with AIDS belong to the age group between 13 to 24 years old.

According to the website
worldaidscampaign.org, most of the youth today have not heard a word about AIDS putting them at high risk of getting the disease.

AIDS or Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome is an illness that impairs the immune system of the body. A simple infection that a healthy body can overcome becomes a full blown disease because the body can no longer protect itself from diseases. AIDS is cause by the virus - HIV or the Human Immunodeficiency Virus.

AIDS is a sexually transmitted disease and can also spread through blood contact or through mother to baby during pregnancy and childbirth.

You can get AIDS through:

Having sex (anal, oral and vaginal contact) with someone with HIV.
Sharing hypodermic needle with someone with HIV ( common to those people who abuse drugs using syringes)
Being transfused with blood infected with HIV.

Based on what I’ve read from Wikipedia, majority of people with AIDS acquired it through having unprotected sexual contact between persons. Using latex condoms during sexual intercourse reduces the risk of getting infected with AIDS.

You can’t get AIDS:

1. through casual contact like shaking hands, kissing or hugging someone with AIDS
2. Swimming in a public pool
3. Sharing food and utensils
4. Donating blood
5. When someone sneeze or cough, because it is not spread through air droplets
6. Through mosquito and other insect bites

To this date, there is no known treatment or vaccination against AIDS. Let us pray that a cure for this fatal disease will be discovered soon.
